Information from “Reaching Out thru International Adoption”, continued from here:
When families travel, we have found a very reasonable hotel that is in the center of Maseru and it comprised of small, several room, cottages or cabanas. They have a living room and one or two bedrooms with televisions, a bathroom and a kitchenette with a microwave oven and a refrigerator. These places are air-conditioned for the hotter months (December through March
which is their summer). There is a food store, Internet cafe, bank and restaurants very close by.
All children will be adopted through the use of a Power of Attorney and thus, will receive an IR 4 visa when you go to the US Consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa. Therefore, you must plan to readopt the child after you return home prior to the first post placement report.
Post placement reports are due at 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months and 24 months. They must be completed by a social worker.
Requirements: There are no specific requirements other than that the adoptive parents be between the ages of 25 and 60. I am sure that there will be concern that the adoptive parent is not much older than would be the case in other countries. The best guideline to use would be that there is no more than 45-50 years age difference between the child and the parent. There is no length of marriage requirement. Single women may adopt. They would like to see some spacing between children and suggest 2 years age difference.
If you have other children, it has been strongly encouraged by the Department of Social Welfare that you take all your children to Lesotho to meet and receive the child.
Again, we hope that it will take no more than 6 months to complete the adoption once your dossier is in to us.
Please call for additional information.
