18. Buy a mobile phone. You will definitely want one.
19. Visit orphanages, talk to a variety of people and ask about available children. Repeat as needed.
20. Choose child or children who will join your family.
21. Petition court for adoption hearing, usually with the help of someone local.
22. Wait.
23. Have court.
24. Receive all finalized court documents.
25. Make at least 3 sets of certified copies, with appropriate stamps.
26. Take passport-size pictures for passports and sometimes for birth certificates.
27. File for new birth certificates.
28. Apply for child's passport with their new legal name.
29. Wait.
30. Cancel airline reservations, as it has been longer than you anticipated.
31. Wistfully think about home, with good Mexican food, crushed ice, and brushing your teeth with tap water – not to mention the children and spouse you left behind.
32. Have a good cry.
33. Repeat steps 30-32 as needed.
34. Pick up new birth certificate and passport.
35. Make appointment for Embassy physical.
36. Have physical done.
37. Make appointment for visa interview.
38. Have visa interview.
39. Obtain visa for child.
40. Re-confirm new flight plans for home.
41. Start home. Survive killer flights by repeating “I can do anything for two days, I can do anything for two days” and "Caffeine is my friend".
42. Arrive home to balloons, flowers, tears and cheers.
