1271611_sa_flag_3It seems that African adoption has stepped to the forefront regarding their newsworthy happenings in the past few months. This is such a difficult time for adoptions from this continent. There have been many issues in the Ethiopian adoption realm. You can catch up on that news by accessing the blog for Ethiopia. Other African countries are struggling under threats of fraud and mishandling. Yet, good news has come out for those of you interested in adopting from South Africa. I believe in the last post, mention was made about a new rule that would make it so a prospective parent would be required to live in South Africa for five years before they could adopt a child from that area. Recently, a letter was sent to the Joint Council clarify that statement.

Basically, the requirement is not in place for people who are adopting intercountry. If you are living in America and desire to adopt from South Africa- this rule does not apply. It is only for those people who are temporarily living in South Africa and want to process a national adoption. What a welcome relief that information is. It is difficult to imagine that a family would have to uproot themselves and relocate to Africa for five years in order to be eligible to adopt. I am not certain that it could even occur realistically.

There were 5 adoptions completed in 2010 involving children from South Africa. This seems like such a small number compared to adoptions from other regions. Yet, South Africa has just as many children who need a good solid base and the love that home brings. It is definitely an area to watch in the future as they work through their adoption issues and begin to open to a larger degree. South Africa is Hague Convention certified and holds to its standards.
